On Sunday June 7, 2015, I sat in a room full of diversified beauty; a gathering of various African-American women from all across the Chicago-land area, with their manes intact and their demeanor to match. It was thee Natural Hair Brunch Affair (coined by the hashtag #NaturalHairBrunchAffairChi) hosted by the dynamic duo sisters of the esteemed Natural Hair Does Care (#NaturalHairDoesCare) and sponsored by LottaBody. The sisters, Shallen-Kaye and Seanna-Kaye, with event partner Cassandra Rosario, the founder and CEO of Food Before Love, presented a magnificent event with an open discussion on natural hair care and tips, storytelling from fashion/natural stylists and bloggers on how they maintain their manes, products used, and styling suggestions. This all occurred as we sat at round tables of mixed company, networking, and enjoying delicious brunch from the host location Brasserie by LM, on Michigan Ave (Chicago, IL). What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than with a mimosa brunch, beautiful melanin sisters, and gift giveaways?

As Shallen and Seanna answered questions from the various attendees on how to improve their natural hair care, and gave background on how they started with a simple Facebook album to growing to a following of over 150,000 in just 2 years, many of the women in the room discovered that they were not alone; so many of us had similar concerns and even hair rituals; Being unified in such a way that only natural, FLY, Black girls can be. There were laughs, raffles, and a plethora of photo opportunities as bonds were formed between these Black Queens. We even got the opportunity to hear from the representation of LottaBody Hair Care, Sakita Holley (House of Success PR), who shared the latest products from her client and gave away hefty gift bags full of new products, the way to any Naturalista’s heart! To cap it off, there were vendors with clothing and accessories to accompany any natural Fly Black Girl’s style; it was simply amazing.

unnamedHey yawl I’m Tyler Marie, or Ty as I’ve come to be called. I am a (West-Side) Chicagoan ‘til Chicago ends. I attended Whitney M. Young Magnet High School here in the city and went on to attend the first Private HBCU, Wilberforce University (OH) where I obtained my B.A. Sociology in 2012. It’s probably pretty clear now that writing is kind of ‘my thing’ but I’m more than okay with that. Other hobbies include eating, playing basketball, modeling and singing. Basically, I spend all my time trying to be as fly of a Black Girl as I can be. Connect with me via: Twitter/Instagram- @_Mighty5| Tumblr- iamjusttyler.tumblr.com
